Fantasy Art

My related study is based on Fantasy Art as it has a direct
relation to Dungeons and Dragons. Fantasy art is a
small hop from mythological art, centaurs, minotaurs, great hydras are present
in both, many of the monsters from mythology make their way into fantasy art.
However fantasy art has mostly been inspired by literature. George Macdonald is
credited with writing the 1st fantasy novel for adults (Phantastes, 1858) and
he was a major influence on C.S Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien who were both
powerhouses in fantasy literature, to the point where almost every piece of
fantasy fiction is either based on what Tolkien established or trying to avoid
what Tolkien established and create something new. I talk about the literature
here because fantasy literature is often the inspiration for fantasy art.

The artists I will be discussing are The Brothers Rembrandt,
Josh Kirby and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The Brothers Rembrandt are best
known for their Star Wars poster art. The Brothers Hildebrandt created poster
art around the time the post modernism movement started.

Josh Kirby did the covers for the Discworld series by Terry
Pratchett, he grew up during the 2nd world war which probably
influenced his art, he made book covers from 1955 to 2001 when he died. When he
got his 1st book cover published Pop art was the most recent art
movement meaning his art was probably influenced by that.

Pre Raphaelite art was created in the 1800s, it was a secret society of young
artists who were opposed to the Royal Academy’s promotion of the ideal as
exemplified in the work of Raphael. The 3 founders were William Holman Hunt,
John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Josh Kirby did the art for the
Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, he appears to take

inspiration from Van Gogh in the piece
‘Reaper Man’. Josh Kirby said he has taken inspiration from

Bosch and Bruegel

Pieter Bruegel, The Harvesters, 1565

Hieronymus Bosch, The Garden of Earthly Delights 1495

When he was a child he was evacuated from Liverpool when it
was attacked by enemy

bombers during the 2nd world war. He then lived
in a mining valley in south Wales where he

lived with a miner’s family. He then went back to Liverpool after the
bombing and went to

Liverpool City Art School where he gained a certificate in
drawing and a Diploma in Painting.

In the image ‘Reaper Man’ The curve of the scythe frames
death and his bright eyes glowing

like the stars also draws you to
him as it is a bright blue against a dull bone colour.

Josh Kirby, Reaper Man, 1991

The wheat field is reminiscent of the

wheat fields in Bruegel’s art
but also        similar to Van Gogh’s
wheat fields and the sky reminds me of ‘A Starry Night’ as it uses a similar
colour palette.

The Brothers Hildebrandt

Greg and Tim Hildebrandt dreamed of being Disney animators,
with they’re style being

influenced by films such as Snow White, Pinocchio and
Fantasia. This never happened,

instead most of their work was for book covers and calendars
for J.R.R Tolkien, Wizards of

the Coast(Dungeons and Dragons and Magic the Gathering) as
well as their iconic film

poster for Star Wars. The Brothers were also inspired by
comics such as Green Lantern,

Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and more.

In the poster art for ‘A New Hope’ there are leading lines
going towards Vader’s head and the flash on Luke’s lightsabre
